Our History

Walter L. Barrett founded Barrett Realty, Inc. in 1935 as a full-service real estate firm in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company initially focused on small subdivisions and single-family homes, eventually leading to the construction and operation of Willowbrook Apartments in 1948. This 48-unit apartment complex provided valuable experience and training for Walter’s three sons: Denny, Dale, and Rex. The family-operated business saw the boys spending summers on maintenance, landscaping, painting, and preparing units, while Walter’s wife, Mary, managed the bookkeeping, accounting, and leasing.

Walter’s untimely passing in 1966 halted the company’s expansion plans, leaving his sons with a legacy of hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. Mary and her sons continued to own and operate the original apartments until the early 1970s when the apartments were sold, and Mary retired.

In 1975, Denny Barrett and his college roommate Randy Stokely incorporated Barrett & Stokely (B&S). Rex Barrett joined the firm six months later, followed closely by brother Dale. Initially a third-party management company, B&S expanded into managing, acquiring and rehabbing properties. By 1994, the principals of B&S had formed individual family investment entities, giving each family the flexibility to pursue specific investment interests in real estate and other areas.

In 1994, Rex Barrett and his three children—Alex, Zach, and Nick—reestablished Barrett Realty, Inc. (BRI), honoring Walter's legacy while embracing innovation and adaptation in the real estate market. BRI's investment interests over the years have been closely related to Walter's vision of developing and owning multifamily properties.

BRI's history reflects a commitment to community and resilience, continuing to uphold the core values instilled by Walter.
